Pedro Martinez on 2004 vs. 2018 championship teams: ‘Big Papi told me to never say that'

Share

In terms of every measurable statistic, the 2018 Red Sox were one of the best teams of all time.

They won a franchise-record 108 games, steamrolled past two other 100-win opponents in the postseason while only losing three games en route to a World Series, and boasted several of the best players in baseball.

Naturally, questions tend to arise now that the offseason has begun. One of those questions is how this team would fare against the curse-breaking 2004 Red Sox team.

Don't ask Pedro Martinez that question.

Pedro hosted his third annual Pedro Martinez Foundation Gala on Friday night, raising money for his organization which helps children and families in Pedro's hometown in the Dominican Republic. Alex Cora, Eduardo Rodriguez, Christian Vazquez, and Jason Varitek were all in attendance.

When asked how he felt his championship team would play against this year's team, he didn't take the bait.

"I can't say. Big Papi told me to never say that."

"I don't know. He just doesn't feel comfortable with it. He's been asked a lot about that, and only because of respect to my compadre David Ortiz, I can't say which one I would choose... but I'll tell you what: I'd be coaching either one if you want me to."

No matter how the teams might stack up, both won championships. For players and fans alike, that's all that really matters.
