BOSTON - John Farrell isn't sure who will start the first game of Boston's six-game road trip, but it won't be Rick Porcello.
The Red Sox placed Porcello on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday due to inflammation and soreness in his tricep. Ryan Cook was activated to the 25-man roster.
Porcello was hit hard for six runs (five earned) in just two-plus innings Wednesday.
Porcello was in a closed-door meeting with GM Ben Cherington, Farrell, and pitching coach Carl Willis Sunday morning.
Farrell announced the news shortly after the meeting.
"He came out of his last start with soreness and inflammation in his tricep," Farrell said of Porcello. "The best we could have done would be to push him back to Saturday to give him ample time, but felt like that was going to be too much of a risk. We feel like its a short term thing, but at the same time we need to back him out of there. He wasn't going to be able to throw a bullpen today. While the symptoms are improving, there's still soreness there.
The soreness does not explain Porcello's struggles prior to last Wednesday's start, as Farrell said it was not a lingering issue and just "cropped up" after the last start. On the season, he's 5-11 with a 5.84 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. The Red Sox signed him to a four-year, $82.5 million extension before the 2015 season.
While nobody has been named starter for Tuesday's game in New York, Farrell did say it would not be somebody currently on the Sox staff. That would most likely make it either Brian Johnson or Henry Owens.
As for the rest of the Yankees series, Stephen Wright will start on Wednesday and Eduardo Rodriguez on Thursday.
