The New York Yankees have agreed to a contract with free agent catcher Russell Martin.
The story was first reported by MLB.com.
The Red Sox were interested in signing the 27-year-old catcher but had major concerns about his health and never offered him anything more than a minor-league deal with incentives, according to an MLB source.
Martin was not tendered a contract by the Los Angeles Dodgers on December 2, making him a free agent. He posted a .248 batting average with 26 RBI and five home runs in 97 games before missing the remainder of the season with a torn hip labrum.
Martin needs to pass a physical before his deal with the Yankees is made final.
