Report: Red Sox postponing White House trip due to government shutdown

Unforeseen circumstances have forced the Boston Red Sox to alter their Washington, D.C. travel plans.

The Red Sox postponed their visit with Donald Trump at the White House due to the government shutdown, The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reported Friday, citing two major league sources.

The team's trip to celebrate its 2018 World Series title originally was scheduled for Feb. 15, right before the team's first official workout of spring training. The visit now is expected to happen on May 9, right after Boston's three-game series with the Orioles in Baltimore from May 6 to May 8.

Red Sox principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner both said last weekend they'd prefer not to visit the White House during the shutdown while government employees aren't getting paid. And despite President Trump and Congressional leaders agreeing to a temporary deal to reopen the government for three weeks, the team's visit will still have to wait.

Manager Alex Cora still is undecided on whether he'll attend the White House ceremony, while several players have said they're either not going or are undecided.
