The Red Sox will place knuckleballer Steven Wright on the 10-day injured list with a toe injury. Wright exited the Red Sox loss to the Dodgers Saturday after taking a line drive from Max Muncy off the foot.
“Steven’s sore,” Alex Cora said, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. “He’s not moving well. He got here and got treatment early.”
It's been a struggle to stay on the field for Wright in 2019. He served an 80-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy and has only appeared in six games this year.
There is no timeline for Wright's return, but the Red Sox also activated newly acquired Andrew Cashner to the active roster. Boston traded for Cashner on Saturday for minor-leaguers Noelberth Romero and Elio Prado to give them some depth in the starting rotation. Cashner posted a 3.83 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 17 starts with the Orioles this season.
Until Nathan Eovaldi comes back to be the full time closer, Boston should expect to be short on bullpen help. Dave Dombrowski said Saturday that the Red Sox may stand pat with any roster moves before the July 31 trade deadline, but injuries may force his hand in upgrading the roster for the stretch run of the season.
