Why Red Sox's four-game slugfest vs. Yankees was unlike any other

A four-game sweep of the New York Yankees would have been nice. But the Boston Red Sox will have to settle for setting a record against their archnemesis.

In falling to the Yankees 9-6 at Fenway Park on Sunday night, the Red Sox brought their run total to 44 over the four-game series. That's a whopping 11 runs per contest. It's also the most either team in this historic rivalry has ever scored in a four-game series against each other.

The 2019 Red Sox one-upped the 1978 Yankees, who bashed their way to 100 wins behind sluggers Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson ... and Bucky Bleepin' Dent, who famously broke Boston's heart in a one-game playoff to decide the AL East.

But this Sox squad left little room for error over the weekend, outscoring New York 39-13 over the first three games thanks to a 19-3 beatdown in the series opener. And while Chris Sale and the bullpen failed them Sunday night, they now lead Major League Baseball in a host of major offensive categories.

Boston's efforts against the Bronx Bombers helped cut its AL East deficit to nine games, while the Sox sit one game back of the second Wild Card spot entering a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays that begins Tuesday.
