Jayson Tatum pulls off an incredible move to score a bucket against the Jazz

What to Know

  • The Celtics (52-19) are five games behind the Cavaliers for first place in the East.
  • The Celtics had six players score in double-digits. Jayson Tatum (30 points) and Sam Hauser (24 points) led the offense. Luke Kornet scored 13 points off the bench and didn't miss a shot (6-for-6).
  • Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday didn't play for Boston.
  • The Celtics have won five straight games. It's their fourth win streak of at least five games this season.
  • Boston's road trip resumes Monday against the Sacramento Kings.

The Boston Celtics are now 2-0 on their longest road trip of the season.

The Portland Trail Blazers put up a good fight, but the Celtics had too much firepower offensively and earned a 129-116 win Sunday night at Moda Center.

The C's are pretty much impossible to beat when they shoot 3-pointers at a high rate, and this game was one example. Boston shot 46 percent (23-for-50) from beyond the arc, led by Sam Hauser (8-for-10) and Derrick White (4-for-10).

All five starters scored in double-digits for the Celtics, including Jayson Tatum's team-leading 30 points.

FINAL: Balanced offense gives C's 129-116 win

Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum nearly tallied a triple-double with 30 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.

The Celtics were without three starters -- Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday -- for Sunday's game against the Trail Blazers, and the entire team stepped up to extend its win streak to five games.

Jayson Tatum led the way with 30 points (with nine rebounds and nine assists), but he wasn't the only player who shined offensively. The Celtics had six players, including all five starters, score in double-digits. Sam Hauser had 24 points on 7-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Payton Pritchard got his first start of the season and scored 16 points against his hometown team (and with his parents in the crowd).

Luke Kornet gave another great performance off the bench. He scored 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting, along with five rebounds and three assists.

Overall, the C's shot 46 percent (23-for-50) from 3-point range and a season-high 54.5 percent from the field. As a result, the Celtics put together their fourth-best offensive rating of any game this season.

End of third quarter: Celtics lead 102-90

The Blazers once again trimmed the Celtics' lead down to single digits, but a late 3-point flurry propelled Boston to a 12-point advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Payton Pritchard erupted near the end of the quarter with three 3-pointers over the final 2:44. Jayson Tatum also dominated in the quarter with 18 points, giving him 24 for the game. Sam Hauser has 21 points on 7-for-8 3-point shooting.

Overall, the Celtics are shooting an impressive 48.8 percent (20-for-41) on 3-pointers.

The Blazers are shooting well from beyond the arc, too. Portland has hit 16 of its 36 3-point attempts (44.4 percent), but Boston just has too much firepower.

Boston's 18-point lead is its largest of the game.

MAR 237:10 PM EDT

Halftime: Celtics lead 64-51

The Blazers had a great start to the second quarter and erased the Celtics' double-digit lead to tie the score at 40-40 with 6:48 remaining. But it was all Boston after that.

The C's closed the half on a 24-11 run, fueled by some hot 3-point shooting and strong defense. Sam Hauser leads the C's with 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Derrick White has chipped in 13 points on 3-for-6 shooting from deep. Jayson Tatum has had his fingerprints all over this game with six points, five assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block. Boston was plus-21 in the first half with Tatum on the floor, but minus-8 when he was on the bench.

C's rookie Baylor Scheierman also has played well off the bench with six points, four rebounds, three assists and one block in 14 minutes. Luke Kornet has six points off the bench on 3-for-3 shooting.

Toumani Camara leads the Blazers with 12 points, but all of his scoring came in the first quarter. Anfernee Simons (11 points) and Dani Avdija (10 points) are also in double-figures.

MAR 236:48 PM EDT

C's rookie Baylor Scheierman playing well

Score: 40-38 Celtics, 7:45 left in second quarter

The Blazers have outscored the Celtics 14-6 to start the quarter, and all of a sudden Boston's 10-point lead is down to two.

Celtics rookie Baylor Scheierman has gotten a lot of minutes (12) so far, and he's making the most of it with six points, four rebounds, three assists and one block.

MAR 236:39 PM EDT

End of first quarter: Celtics 34-24

The Celtics played excellent in the first 12 minutes, led by Jayson Tatum. The superstar forward scored six points with four assists, three rebounds and one steal, putting him on triple-double watch.

Two Celtics rookies -- Baylor Scheierman and JD Davison -- made a strong impact in the first quarter. Scheierman hit two 3-pointers and tallied two rebounds and two assists. Davison scored four points with one rebound, one assist and one steal.

Toumani Camara leads the Blazers with 12 points on 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range. Shaedon Sharpe chipped in seven points, while Deni Avdija added five points. No other Blazers players scored in the quarter.
