What Joe Mazzulla tells Celtics about dealing with criticism

What Joe Mazzulla tells Celtics about dealing with criticism

Joe Mazzulla shares what he tells his players about how to deal with both praise and criticism off the court and why both can be detrimental if not taken the right way.

After leading the Boston Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship, a fired-up Jayson Tatum addressed his critics by asking, "What they gonna say now?''

He has since found out that not even a dominant title run can quiet the naysayers.

Tatum was the subject of a heated debate on ex-NBAer Gilbert Arenas' podcast. During the discussion, former NBA guard Brandon Jennings called Tatum the "softest superstar in Celtics history."

The criticism clearly got to Tatum, who responded with an Instagram post. C's coach Joe Mazzulla addressed the issue in vintage Mazzulla fashion the next day on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand.

Ranking the Celtics' 10 biggest threats in their quest to repeat

Ranking the Celtics' 10 biggest threats in their quest to repeat

On Zolak & Bertrand, Joe Mazzulla came to Jayson Tatum’s defense in typical Mazzulla fashion after Brandon Jennings’ call-out of the Celtics superstar.

Wednesday night's Thunder-Cavaliers showdown lived up to every bit of the hype.

The first battle of teams on double-digit win streaks in 30 years featured 30 lead changes and had an obvious playoff feel. And the fact that Cleveland emerged despite an off night from Donovan Mitchell (11 points on 3 of 16 shooting) only hammers home how much the frontcourt tandem of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen have evolved (46 points and 22 rebounds combined).

We spent much of the week pondering Boston’s biggest threats in its quest to repeat while the Celtics were visiting top Western Conference foes. But Wednesday’s game might truly have been a showdown of the two biggest obstacles in Boston’s quest for another Larry O’Brien Trophy.

So nearing the midway point of the 2024-25 season, here’s one writer's opinion on Boston’s top threats:

Mazzulla has awesome reaction to Brandon Jennings calling Tatum ‘soft'

On Zolak & Bertrand, Joe Mazzulla came to Jayson Tatum’s defense in typical Mazzulla fashion after Brandon Jennings’ call-out of the Celtics superstar.

Brandon Jennings may have picked the wrong NBA superstar to criticize -- especially considering which head coach that superstar plays for.

Jennings, a former NBA player who last played in 2018, caused a stir on a recent episode of Gilbert Arena's podcast when he wondered aloud whether Jayson Tatum is the "softest Boston Celtics superstar ever."

"If you’re so tough, why you didn’t get Finals MVP last year?" Jennings said of Tatum. "Why you let your running mate (Jaylen Brown) do it? If you so tough, if you so all this, why you didn’t get it? Why you didn’t get it?"

On Wednesday night, Tatum fired back at Jennings with an Instagram post of his highlights that included the caption "SoFtesT SuPeRstar in CeLtiC HiStoRy" with a laughing emoji.
