Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics pull off rare feat, all losing on the same day

The Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, and Boston Bruins pulled off a rare feat on Saturday.

The Bruins dropped a 4-1 afternoon game to the Florida Panthers. The Celtics dropped an early-evening game to the Brooklyn Nets, 110-96. And the Red Sox' comeback bid came up short in the 9th inning against the Seattle Mariners, dropping the game 6-5.

Per Boston Sports Info, this was the first time that all three teams had lost on the same day since 2013. It was only the fifth time this has happened since the turn of the century.

To examine just how rare this feat, let's take a look back at how different the teams were the last time that this happened, April 23, 2013.

On that day, the Celtics lost to the New York Knicks, 87-71. Paul Pierce (18) led the Celtics in scoring while playing alongside Kevin Garnett, Brandon Bass, Avery Bradley, and Jeff Green in the starting lineup. Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks in scoring with 34 points.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox trotted out Alfredo Aceves as their starter and dropped a game to the Oakland Athletics who got a seven-inning effort out of Bartolo Colon. Only one member of the Red Sox's starting lineup, Dustin Pedroia, is still with the team.

The Bruins team is the most unchanged -- five players from 2013 are still on the team today -- but they still have some names that are blasts from the past. Notably, Wade Redden had a goal on which Jaromir Jagr had an assist. Meanwhile, Anton Khudobin and Tuukka Rask combined to allow five goals to the Flyers.

There are only a small number of days where something like this could happen in a given year, but it's still impressive that it has happened so infrequently in the past 20 years. It points to the success that these three Boston sports teams have found during the past two decades.
