Pereira on NFL: ‘They want to protect quarterbacks the most'

Is the NFL being over-protective of its quarterbacks? Brandon Spikes was called for a roughing-the-passer penalty on Sunday that made quarterback safety a hot-button issue once again.

On Monday, Mike Felger asked former NFL head of officiating Mike Pereira if the league ever considered putting flags on quarterbacks so that they wouldn't have to be tackled. And he was serious.

Pereira explained that, no, flags were never in play. But he did admit that the league has a serious focus on keeping its quarterbacks safe. He said it's not necessarily a financial decision that the NFL's Competition Committee has made to treat quarterbacks differently, but because players at that position have so much to do with winning and losing, it's only logical to have a different set of rules that applies to them.

Check out the above video to hear Pereira explain the makeup of the Competition Committee and what factors play in to its decisions on player safety.
