Holy Cross announced on Friday that Amanda Belichick, daughter of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, has been named the head coach of its Division I women's lacrosse team.
"I am excited and honored to be the next women's lacrosse coach at Holy Cross," Belichick told the school's website. "I want to thank Nathan Pine, Joe Bertoletti and the entire search committee for this opportunity and for believing in my vision for the future of Holy Cross women's lacrosse. I look forward to building on the school's great tradition and working with the talented student-athletes in the program."
Belichick served as head coach at Division III Wesleyan -- her alma mater and Bill's -- for the last two seasons. Prior to that, she was an assistant coach at both Ohio State (2011-13) and UMass Amherst (2010). As a player at Wesleyan, Belichick served as a senior captain and finished her career with 47 goals and 25 assists.
Coaching runs in the Belichick family and extends beyond what Bill has done in his football career: Steve Belichick, Bill's father, was a longtime coach and scout at the Naval Academy; Bill's older son Steve is going into his fourth year as a coaching assistant with the Patriots; Brian Belichick, Bill's younger son, graduated from Trinity College in the spring and has often been seen on the sidelines at Patriots games and assisting at practices.
Though the Belichick name may be most closely associated with the sport of football, the family has long held an affinity for lacrosse as well. Bill, Steve and Brian Belichick all, like Amanda, played lacrosse in college, and the Bill Belichick Foundation's home page reads in part: "Focusing on football and lacrosse, its mission is to bring the values of the Belichick family -- a love of sports, coaching and team building -- to the athletic leaders of tomorrow."
