The Patriots will be in the market for a backup quarterback after dealing Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers.

Could a familiar face return to back up Tom Brady again?

That could be the case now that the 49ers have released quarterback Brian Hoyer, according to Adam Schefter.

Hoyer, 32, spent three seasons as the Patriots backup quarterback from 2009-2011. He signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the 49ers this past offseason and had an 0-6 record in six starts for San Francisco this season before being replaced by rookie C.J. Beathard.
