Source: Patriots trade DE Michael Bennett to Cowboys

The Michael Bennett era in New England has come to an end.

The Patriots traded the veteran defensive end to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday for a seventh-round draft pick that can go to a sixth-round pick in 2021, a source told NBC Sports Boston's Phil Perry.

The Patriots clear approximately $2.6 million in cap space by parting ways with Bennett.

The deal doesn't come as much of a surprise. Bennett's days as a Patriot appeared to be numbered especially when the 33-year-old was suspended by the team after having a "philosophical disagreement" with the coaching staff.

While Bennett has played his last down as a Patriot, it likely wasn't his last in Foxboro this year. The Cowboys will visit the Pats for a Nov. 24 matchup.
