For 17 years, Ty Law was the gold standard for cover cornerbacks in the NFL. He led the league in interceptions twice, made five Pro Bowls and won three Super Bowls in New England.
On Saturday in Canton, OH, Law will be recognized for his decorated career. Alongside the rest of the Class of 2019, Law will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But even Law admits his personal achievements wouldn't be possible without his teammates and the success of his Patriots teams.
"You can't get to the Hall of Fame by yourself," Law said during a conference call on Tuesday. "Football, first of all, is the ultimate team sport. A lot of pieces have to come together for you to be successful, and I know for myself that I'm not there on statistical reasons alone. I'm there because I was a part of something special: The New England Patriots and a dynasty, three Super Bowl championships."
Law also called his Super Bowl-winning Patriots squads "the most unselfish team that I've ever been a part of." He called out Willie McGinnest, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and Lawyer Milloy as teammates who especially pushed Law to become a truly great defensive back. Law hopes that his induction "opens up the floodgates" for his former teammates.
And though he was known in his playing days for his competitiveness, work ethic and trash-talking, expect his induction speech to be on the more humble side, like Rodney Harrison's was for the team's Hall.
"I happen to be the recipient of such an award through the hard work and the blood, sweat and tears of the guys that I played with, and I'm happy to represent those guys because it's not just me in the Hall of Fame. Those guys are right there with me."
