Latest update on Carlo's injury isn't good for Bruins blue line

The Boston Bruins blue line is in rough shape right now.

UPDATE (Saturday, April 3 at 7 p.m. ET): B's head coach Bruce Cassidy said after Saturday's win that Brandon Carlo's injury is a new one that's not related to the March 5 hit from Tom Wilson.

--End of Update--

The team announced Saturday morning that defenseman Brandon Carlo will be evaluated on a "week-to-week basis" with an upper body injury suffered during Thursday night's loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Therefore, he will miss Saturday afternoon's matchup against the Penguins and likely more.

Carlo suffered an upper body injury when he was boarded by Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson on March 5. Wilson was suspended seven games for the hit. Carlo missed 10 games before making his return to the lineup in Tuesday's victory over the New Jersey Devils.

The Bruins have three legitimate top-four defenseman, and now one of them (Carlo) is out of the lineup. This will put a lot of pressure on the other two -- Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk -- to consistently perform at a high level.

A top-four defenseman was already the most pressing need for the Bruins ahead of the April 12 NHL trade deadline, and this setback for Carlo only increases the importance of adding this type of player.
