Carles Gil and Andrew Farrell both were recognized for their spectacular 2019 seasons with the New England Revolution.
Gil was voted the Revs' Team MVP by fans and Players' Player of the Year by his teammates. The 26-year-old midfielder tallied 10 goals and 14 assists on the year, making him one of only three MLS players to reach double digits in both categories.
Revolution head coach Bruce Arena spoke highly of Gil after the Spaniard earned the awards.
"He's been an outstanding player for me since I've been here and obviously before I was here," Arena said. "He's had a great year. He does a fabulous job every day in the locker room, in training. He's the most obvious choice. I think he gathered an awful lot of votes and it's probably pretty close to being unanimous. He simply has been outstanding and I think he's a player that can be strongly considered for the best 11 in our league."
For Farrell, it was his second straight season earning the Revs' Defender of the Year honor. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft ranks second on the team with 170 possessions won and leads the Revs in headed clearances (54) and total clearances (120).
"Obviously it's an individual award, but I think the progress that the team's made defensively from the beginning of the year is, I think, a credit to everybody on the team," Farrell said. "There's a lot of guys who deserve it on our team and it's not just the backline but Matt Turner, guys on the midfield and guys up top who make it easier for us to do our job."
After a slow start to the season, the Revs turned things around once Arena was hired as head coach in May and clinched a playoff berth. They'll face Atlanta United on Sunday, then prepare for Round One of the postseason.
